Yesterday the whole school came together to commemorate VE Day. The celebrations began with a special assembly, where children learned about the importance of Victory in Europe Day and reflected on its historical significance.
Following the assembly, pupils took part in a variety of activities, including dance and history workshops that brought the spirit and stories of the 1940s to life. These interactive sessions allowed children to deepen their understanding of the past in fun and engaging ways.
The highlight of the day was our whole-school picnic, held on the school field. Children shared food, played together, and enjoyed each other’s company creating a lovely atmosphere. It was a fantastic way to celebrate.
Year 6 also held an assembly for the school the day before.
“7 year 6 members held an assembly of VE-Day. We did the VE-Day assembly because everybody in the school needed to remember and appreciate the people who died in WW2, it was the 80th anniversary of VE-Day. As we explained there were many parades and street parties yesterday nearly all over the country. Germany’s surrender was officially accepted on May 8th, 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe, also marking the beginning of VE-Day.” – Angel, Shanelle and Manasvi, Year 6.
Quotes from the children:
“The historical workshops taught us a lot in a way that was easy to understand.” – Wren, Year 3.
” I learnt so much about VE Day.” – Maisie, Year 4.
“The picnic was great and thank you for an excellent day.” – Lucas, Year 4.
“Firstly, we came into school in red, white and blue to symbolise the flag of Great Britain. During the day we had events based around VE Day. I liked the day because we were able to remember the soldiers who fought in the war and the celebrations after the war was over.” – Leonie, Year 6 .
